I recently had my truck and TW200 driven out to where I currently reside. Last time I rode the TW, I noticed that it was leaking oil out of the leftside crankcase cover. I figured it was one of three possibilities:
-
It was leaking from the crankcase cover, which I had used silicon gasket maker to seal, rather than the standard issue paper gasket that is standard for the engine.
-
The main output shaft seal.
-
The crankcase shaft seal (The main output shaft nests into the leftside crankcase, within a ball bearing and exterior shaft seal. Engine oil is pumped into where the shaft nests to oil the ball bearing).
The fix did not take long to accomplish. All I did was buzz off the leftside crankcase cover with my electric ratchet, pulled the case cover oil seal, and pounded a new one in. I did not replace the crankcase side main output shaft seal because I purchased the incorrect seal. I resealed the leftside cover with more silicon gasket maker, and bolted the cover back down. I waited 24 hours before starting the engine again. I have not ridden the bike much since the fix, but so far there aren’t any leaks, meaning that the likelihood that it was the case cover leaking was unlikely. If it was a seal, it would only leak when the shaft was spinning. If it was the outside cover seal, replacing the seal would have fixed it. However, like I stated, I have not ridden much to determine whether it was that seal or not. I placed some UV dye in the oil. If there is a leak, I should be able to identify it next time I observe any leaks.
