Calls vs Texting

I’ve found in my life that lots of people struggle with making phone calls, or sending text messages. This may sound silly, because making a phone call is easy, and sending a text message isn’t all the difficult either. However, I’ve found that people overall struggle with understanding the purpose of a phone call, or a text message, and when and how to send them. So I’ll give an outline as to how I use phone calls and texts.

Phone calls are for immediate or urgent needs/desires to contact someone. You call someone directly because you need to coordinate, pass information off, or receive information from someone. You call someone because there is some communication that is time sensitive, and you need to pass it off to them. When I call people, it’s usually because I’m trying to coordinate where to meet, something I need, or because one of us needs information right at that moment.

Text messages are not time sensitive. A text message should be sent under the assumption that the receiver will not respond instantly. That doesn’t mean the receiver should not respond instantly if they see it. However, a text message should be sent under the assumption that a reply might not occur for a while after the message was sent. Text messages should also be sent as a reminder, or to pass off information in writing to the receiver.

I hope this helps.
